Children’s National Medical Center

Washington, D.C.

Children's National Healthy System

Every day, a deck of cards, a doll or a stuffed animal puts a smile on the face of a child who hasn’t smiled in quite some time. Dr. Bear®’s Closet has donated toys, games, books and other items that help boost the spirits of patients of all ages. A well-stocked Dr. Bear®’s Closet ensures that every patient has a gift for holidays, birthdays and most importantly, a little something to serve as a reward for their courage in fighting an illness.

The closet provides items to thousands of patients who are treated in Children’s inpatient units, the Emergency Department and Regional Outpatient Centers, and the Health Centers. Toys also help stock playrooms in the hospital.

Playing is essential when a child is undergoing difficult treatment or procedures due to illness. Providing a new game or toy and watching a smile light up a child’s face is a special moment for families, staff and volunteers.

New River Family Shelter

Christiansburg, Virginia

New River Family Shelter

New River Family Shelter (NRFS) is the only scattered shelter program in the NRV providing emergency housing to families with children.

NRFS seeks to end family homelessness and empower families to achieve lasting self-sufficiency by providing safe, emergency housing, as well as connections to local support programs.

As the only scattered shelter program in the New River Valley, we offer a private, supportive environment for families to recover from a housing crisis. We also connect families to local support programs to address the need for food, clothing, education, and employment. As a community, we can work together to end long-term homelessness and empower families to achieve lasting self-sufficiency.

Ronald McDonald House Charities | Southwest Virginia

Roanoke, Virginia

Ronald McDonald House Charities | Southwest Virginia

Life can change so quickly – at Ronald McDonald House, many of our families know firsthand how true that statement is – whether for specialized treatment, emergency surgery or a baby’s premature arrival, a teenager who is involved in an automobile accident, or a child diagnosed with a life threatening illness – life can suddenly turn upside down. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, wives, husbands, sons, daughters, family members who have come to Roanoke to be with a loved one in a local hospital – a relatively quiet family life can be stressed by separations and hospitalizations, a circle of friends may suddenly enlarge to include doctors, nurses and medical specialists, a close knit family might be scattered to distant areas to secure the very best medical treatment possible for a sick child. It can happen so quickly. Yet in the midst of all that may seem so frightening and unsettling, the Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a safe, secure and comfortable environment.

In a frightening, confusing situation, Ronald McDonald House Charities, can offer stability, peace
and calm with the Ronald McDonald House and our Ronald McDonald Family Room.

The Ronald McDonald House on South Jefferson Street opened May 5, 1984. We became the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia in 1997. In September 2007, the Ronald McDonald Family Room was opened on the 14th floor of the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital.
